A song that reminds you of your childhood

Today is day 29 of the 30-Day Music Challenge. Remember? Issa countdown. The events surrounding today's selection are questionable.

Last Saturday, I set my Apple Music to “Parliament Funkadelic Radio” and took to cleaning my house and getting ready for brunch with my sister and grandparents.  Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration” came on and all these strange memories started streaming in my mind’s Blu-ray player.

When I was 4 years old, my mom was in the Army and I attended preschool on base in Fort Dix, New Jersey. It’s starting to become apparent to me that some of my early development may be in question. “Celebration” Michael Jackson’s Thriller album and a host of other music were in heavy rotation in that classroom. My teachers were so dedicated to playing this kind of stuff in the classroom that it all spun loudly on the classroom record player. Yes, they went out and copped the vinyl just so they could listen to their favorite feel-good jams at work. Maybe I should have been learning more critical skills, but I suspect that I may have been a part of some early education music appreciation experiment. I don’t remember sitting around singing “Wheels On The Bus.” I vividly remember singing “Double Dutch Bus.” God, bless America.

Since I am one thousand percent sure that I was introduced to this funk-filled song in my preschool classroom, “Double Dutch Bus” takes the win for Day 29—a song that reminds you of your childhood. I can only imagine how turned up a group of spirited, precocious 4-year-olds became when this groovy beat started to play. It’s rumored that I had a childhood obsession with Tone Loc, so I can imagine that I was more thrilled about Frankie Smith’s raspy voice than any of them.

I'm getting excited just thinking about it.

If you’re feeling as live as me today, comment and let me know what song reminds you of your childhood. Come back tomorrow for Day 28—a song by an artist with a voice you love.
